The Evolution of Super Nupe – Part 3

As we started this quest to create a scaled figure that represented our grand fraternity we were promptly educated on the Kappa brand and the things that were necessary for us to do, and not do, in order to be compliant with our organizations brand guidelines. My initial posts got the attention of IHQ and our fraternity’s leadership wanted to make sure that whatever we did would be aligned with the current vision of the Grand Chapter. This was no issue for us since our intent was to seek licensing for any product that we would release anyway.
Once we identified the necessary adjustments to those original figures I began work on the prototype for Kappa Man. What we didn’t know was that we had way more to learn about the collectible figure industry than initially anticipated. (Be sure to put a pin here as I will come back to this point in later installments.) During this time, we were also in the final stages of planning for our chapter’s, the Sigma of Kappa Alpha Psi, 100th anniversary. This is a key factor in the evolution of Super Nupe.
Dr. Vernon Williams was slated to be the keynote speaker during our 100th gala celebration. I arrived in Detroit a couple of days before the gala and he hit me up to ask if I had any type of art that depicted a Nupe as a superhero. It’s crazy because when I was creating visuals for our centennial events I had an idea to do something superhero related but scratched it for something else. I was unable to provide visuals for him but it didn’t matter. His speech was fire!
